George Soros to Invest $1 Billion in Green Energy
Posted by: Mark Scott on October 12

The upcoming climate talks in Copenhagen are less than two months away, and everyone is looking to throw in his/her two cents. On Oct. 10, it was billionaire George Soros’ turn to get in on the act. Giving a speech in Denmark, the man who famously ‘broke the Bank of England’ in the early 1990s now plans to invest $1 billion in clean energy technology. Another $100 million — doled out in $10 million increments annually over ten years — will fund the newly-created Climate Policy Initiative, a foundation targeted at environmental policy.

That’s a sizeable amount of cash, though Soros didn’t specify where the $1 billion would be spent other than saying ‘stringent conditions’ will be used to evaluate potential investments. And in an ironic twist, Soros, who made a sizeable chunk of his fortune through currency speculation, put his support behind carbon taxes, not cap-and-trade systems. His reason? Financial investors can too easily manipulate carbon markets.

Soros is wise to keep his cards close to his chest. With so much money on the table, potential deals could be given a ‘Soros premium’ if the billionaire focuses on a too-narrow clean energy brief. But some of his likes/dislikes are already known. Soros, for instance, has invested in clean coal technology, including Portsmouth (NH)-based Powerspan Corp that specializes in carbon capture technology.

Yet before we start speculating too much on where Soros will spend his cash, a word of caution is merited.

Other high-profile figures, such as T. Boone Pickens, have made similar promises of multi-million dollar investments. Often, though, their plans have come to nothing. That obviously doesn't mean Soros won't go ahead with his $1 billion scheme. But until concrete plans are announced, I'll reserve judgment. As Rod Tidwell (from Jerry Maguire fame) once said: 'show me the money.'

Indeed, the more important figure -- for me -- is $25.9 billion. That's the amount of money invested in green energy projects in the third quarter of 2009, according to New Energy Finance. After a shaky start to the year, investors are now more willing to fork out for clean energy projects. The gradual thawing of the credit markets certainly has helped. So have government-sponsored funds -- like renewable feed-in tariffs or other subsidies for green technologies -- that were included in global stimulus packages.

So with investment returning to the sector, maybe Soros has picked a good time to buy in. Other investors will keep a close eye where he puts his money.

Dear Friends of America, Pickens International and 41 World USA Global -
Dr. Steven Chu and U.S. Department of Energy provided additional stimulus funds to the States Offices of Energy Independence. For example, our Governor of Wisconsin, The Hon. Jim Doyle, announced Monday millions in new State and Federal matching funds for Green Manufacturing Jobs. We have Wisconsin connections and information on file if you are interested. WI is #15 Green State in USA moving up.

1) Clean Energy Pickens Plan - we are active in Pickens Plan and in our local WIS-MIN bi-states and Regional 5 States WI-MN-IA-IL-MI Clean Energy Groups as proponents of a Clean Green Energy Future
in Wind/Solar/hydro alternatives, hybrids. We had a face to face with our State Senator on Friday.

2) Healthcare for All-Americans - we support U.S President Barack Obama, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius in Healthcare Change. We attended local WI Regional Healthcare meetings this week in Eau Claire, La Crosse, Madison, Milwaukee and Green Bay. We met and spoke with Tommy Thompson Friday.

Alternative Clean Energy and Healthcare Plans are both equally important in the long run in concepts, needs, and financially for Americans, our States, Country and the World we all live in and share. We hope our good friends on T Boone Pickens Plan are having a spectacular summer! Our family is visiting from New York. We will be travelling to Pike's Peak Colorado Springs, CO this Friday to Sunday.

RE: New Recovery Act Funds from U.S. Department of Energy We are sending this to our Friends, Energy Community leaders and partners in State and USA Pickens Planet in hopes you can use and share Dept. of Energy Grant and Funds Opportunities with your local members and associates interested in new funds and money for Clean Energy. We wanted to send this Special Note to our excellent, small group of Pickens Plan Community leaders and volunteers because we know how smart you're working, believe in your continued work, and know there are opportunities now for innovative projects funded by States and USA programs. Examples: • There are 25 USA Solar cities. Two of them here in Madison and Milwaukee, WI. We're interested in transforming our City of La Crosse into a Solar City here. New DOE Funds (Solar Market Transforms) has grants for American Solar Cities; • High Penetration Solar Deploy FOA (DE-FOA-0000085) is an excellent opportunity for Energy programs to get more funds to advance Solar Electric Generation in WI, MN, IA, IL, MI, Midwest, West, South, East, and Nationwide; • A new CHP/District Energy/Waste Recovery and Industrial Energy Efficiency FOA (DE-FOA-0000044) can benefit Manufacturers and Large Energy users in States and USA ; • Wisconsin has Major Utilities working on Carbon Capture. There are 2 new FOA’s (DE-FOA-000033 and DE-FOA 0000080) provide funding opportunities for site characterization of promising geologic formations for CO2 storage and sequestration technology training States-USA. • A new geothermal/ground source heat pump FOA will fund mid to large-scale cost-shared demonstration projects and fund other activities. There is a significant need for this in States-USA. • A new, energy efficiency “Challenge Grant” opportunity for large industrial energy users (Industrial Energy Efficiency Grand Challenge grants). Check list of new FOAs in States-USA DOE. Thank you!

Making Solar Electricity Affordable

Many people who are contemplating installing solar electric systems on their homes struggle with the high initial costs.
To pay for a system, they either have to dip into their savings or take out a loan.
A 3- to 5-kW grid-connected solar system, suitable for most homes, can run $30,000 to $50,000.
Even with recent legislation that provides a 30 percent tax credit for solar and wind systems for homes and businesses,
the cost of such as system will still cost $21,000 to $30,000, which is a substantial piece of change.
Isn’t there some way to reduce this cost?
There is. It's called efficiency.
Richard Perez, founder of Home Power magazine, ran the numbers.
He found that every dollar invested in energy efficiency could reduce the cost of a photovoltaic (PV) system by $3 to $5.
How?
By reducing the size of a system one must install to meet his or her needs.
The economic savings from efficiency are quite substantial. For instance,
a $2,000 investment in home energy efficiency — for example, weatherization, insulation and energy-efficient compact fluorescent or
LED light bulbs — will reduce the demand for electricity. This, in turn, will reduce the size of the PV system required to meet one’s needs.
It could easily save $6,000 to $10,000 on the cost of the system of a 3- to 5-kW PV system before tax incentives.
Taking into account the 30% federal tax credit, the savings would be $4,200 to $7,000.
Spend a little more on efficiency and the cost of the system drops even more. If you invested $4,000 in efficiency,
the total system cost would decline by $12,000 to $20,000.
Taking into account the federal tax credits once again and the decrease in initial cost would be $8,400 to $14,000.
That’s not a bad return on an investment in efficiency.
Instead of spending $21,000 to $30,000 for a system, you’d pay $12,600 to $16,000.
So, if you're thinking about installing a PV system, think efficiency first. It’s a gift you give yourself and the planet.
It will reduce energy demand, reduce pollution, and reduce the cost of a system substantially.
Moreover, the savings will provide dividends for the life of the house.
