As I read the Comment Board of the Northern Nevada Alternative Energy it is apparent that we have interests beyond just those embraced in the Pickens Plan; however, the Pickens Plan Pledge cannot be modified as it is signed and submitted. As a result, I have modified it in the pledge below in an attempt to reduce partisanship and the influence of lobbyists, and to broaden the energy focus. Please consider it and submit this one or a similar pledge.

Let's continue to use this board to channel our efforts effectively.

National Energy Independence Pledge

We no longer stand by and watch as America's national security and economy becomes more dependent on the unstable foreign nations that we rely on for nearly 70% of hte oil we use each day.

We spend nearly $700 billion every year buying foreign oil, which represents the greatest transfer of wealth in the history of mankind.

The new President and the 111th Congress need to enact an energy plan that reduces out foreign oil dependence by at least 30% within ten years. In order to minimize partisan interests lobbying influence it should be based on the findings of a independent bi-partisan commission of scientists and economists that will remain in existence to counsel the Congress and the nation on the progress of the energy plan and modifications to it in light of new technologies and lessons learned.

The new President and the 111th Congress needs to enact and energy plan that reduces out foreign oil dependence by at least 30% within ten years.

This plan must include proven technologies, the development of new energy sources, incentives for research in new energy techologies and the expansion and modernization of the national electric grid to transport renewable energy to homes and businesses. It should embrace the best aspects of such national independent movements as the Pickens Plan.

To get a program moving quickly the initial report of the commission and the resulting appropriation for the national energy plan should be enacted within within the first six months of the new administration and should address initial outlays for the major proven technologies and the development of the modernization of the national electric gird.

Hurrah for Mr. Pickens for filling the current void of leadership. There are 1,000 reasons why, in a routine world, extraordinary projects won't work - but this is anything but a routine world. Mr. Pickens is right. The US is bleeding its wealth away daily and if we wait a few more years to stop it, it will be too late to recover. The developed world will quit buying our debt because they know (and we will know) we cannot repay it. It's time to get the oil needle out of our arms.

The Pickens plan is one leg of the stool in this national emergency. Another is a massive program to develop nuclear power plants. A third is extraordinary focus on alternative forms of energy. A fourth is to change our lifestyle dramatically - we need to reduce driving our cars as much as possible, make short trips on foot or bicycles, unplug appliances when not in use, monitor thermostats, use as much natural heating and cooling as possible, boost mass transportation substantially and wean ourselves from meat intensive diets (cattle, sheep and pigs are major contributors to methane, another high carbon gas).

Mr. Bush is our president for seven more months ($408 billion in capital outflow by Mr.Pickens numbers). He needs to get out of the closet on the energy issue and lead by building a selfless plan with which the next president can continue. The most renowned and respected people in the country need to contribute time to public media spots to get Americans to understand the threat to our nation from the drain of our national wealth and global warming. The time to change was 10 years ago, but that is water over the dam. We certainly cannot wait another 2 or 3 years.
